During the season 1 finale, Archie attempted to address possible feelings for Betty but was shut down by his best friend. Over the years, she’s worked as editor of the Riverdale Register, a local newspaper, and she’s now currently a reporter for the Riverdale news channel. After her husband, Hal Cooper, was revealed to be a serial killer named the Black Hood, Alice started to date FP Jones, Jughead’s father, until actor Skeet Ulrich left the show in season 5. Beyond that, Betty has long struggled with a history of murder in her family and what it means to possess the serial killer gene.
Her great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all evil murderers. Jughead claims that this was merely circumstance, but Betty begs to differ. She worries that the twins might even grow up to be murderers, much like her father.
So whenever Betty’s looking at men or looking at women, there’s this spark of sexuality in her eyes that I tried to bring. If I could describe Betty in one word this season, it would be horny. That is her first little arc and journey that we go through, her with Kevin. The core of her storyline in Season 7 has been exploring her sexuality and fighting against everyone who is telling her to keep it in her pants. She’s like, “Nope, not going to.” And she’s pushing those boundaries and going up against people telling her that she should be ashamed.

However, in “The Locked Room” we learned that not only did they have to write about it—they had to commit it as well. After Jughead won the contract, Principal DuPont set the other students a challenge—anyone who could get away with murdering Jughead would get the contract. Betty, Archie, and Veronica find Jughead injured in the woods and rescue him, but Betty decides to fake his death to buy them time to figure out why the students want Jughead dead.
What better way to give Polly the spotlight than by pairing her with Jughead – one of the show’s most important characters? While it may be a little strange for Jughead to date Betty’s sister, stranger things have happened in Riverdale. Penny is a ruthless former Southside Serpent who wanted to slice Jughead’s Serpent tattoo off with a knife. As fate would have it, Jughead ultimately sliced Penny’s tattoo off.

The kiss was actually meant only as a means of getting back at Archie and Betty for kissing back when that Black Hood drama was going down. Right when the four arrived at the Lodges’ cabin, Cheryl Blossom called up Jughead and revealed to him that she saw Betty and Archie kiss a few months ago. Awkwardly, everyone else in the cabin already knew about this — Archie told Veronica about it a while back and they worked through it already — but now that Jughead has found out, it’s all out in the open.
At the dinner, Alice goes on the attack, grilling FP on what he does for the Southside Serpents and whether he was upset that Hirem Lodge bought the drive-in land. At this point, FP and Jughead totally know what Alice is up to and FP fights fire with fire, bringing up the massive “life SDC.com phone number or death” fight he overheard she and Hal having at homecoming when they were high schoolers. When Jughead’s private party gets hijacked by Cheryl and her crew, Jughead is piiiiisssssed. But Betty doesn’t give up and throws Jughead a low-key birthday party, which causes an argument.
The very next day, he calls Betty from a payphone at Southside High to inform her that he will not be returning to Riverdale because he is finally where he belongs. Much to his surprise, Archie, Betty, and Veronica show up after assuming that he was in need of their help. Just outside the school, he and Betty discuss his decision of leaving Riverdale High ahead of schedule, as Betty is unwilling to allow “Riverdale Civil War” to split the two of them up. With this information, they go to the Sheriff Station, only to learn that FP had confessed to the murder.

Donna tearfully explains that she and Mr. Chipping were having an affair and that he gave her his tie pin. Betty arrives at Stonewall Prep during the ice storm to discuss the suspicious circumstances of Mr. Chipping’s death, such as how he died shortly after confronting DuPont about the story that Jughead’s grandfather wrote. Jughead suspects that DuPont threatened or blackmailed Chipping into killing himself. Assuming that is the case, Betty wonders what leverage DuPont could’ve had over Chipping to make him kill himself. Jughead shows Betty two year book photos of DuPont and Chipping, which are decades apart.
That twist isn’t addressed again for the rest of the season, so it’s up to season 5 to elaborate on Charles and Chic’s scheme. During their sit-down, Jessica brings up the fact that Betty got with Archie and just how much that hurt Jughead. Betty retorts by replying that Jughead isn’t so innocent and plays them a voice message from 2 years ago, with Jughead yammering on about how she bailed on him. He said that she pretended to be kind, but she’s truly cruel, referring to Betty as a “cold, fake, duplicitous bitch.” Jessica had no idea and says that she was living with Jughead then. Their relationship started out good, but then his writing started to get the best of him, causing him to spiral, as did Jessica.
Her older brother Charlie Cooper was placed for adoption and older sister Polly Cooper has moved out of Riverdale, their hometown. Charlie moved to New York City and Polly to San Francisco, but both occasionally appear in flashbacks to Betty’s childhood, and both occasionally visit their family. She is portrayed by Lili Reinhart on Riverdale and Khushi Kapoor on The Archies. In July 2022, Aguirre-Sacasa discussed how Jughead and Tabitha became one of the show’s “big romances” in season 6. “With the love triangles, there’s possibly going to be some tension there. I definitely think Choni will be a thing in this new season,” Vanessa Morgan teased during an interview with Hidden Remote in September 2022. At the time, Sprouse noted that Jughead was supportive of his ex-girlfriend’s current romance.

It’s a great story for young women, even today in general, who live in a society that loves to slut shame and get at women for dating or whatever. It’s been fun to play a girl who’s so hell-bent on having her own experiences and being seen and following her desire. I’ve had a great time playing that and I’ve gotten to make out with literally everyone on the show. As Rivervale begins to unravel and townsfolk begin to die, Betty shoots Archie in the back of the head and kills him to stop him from strangling the life from Jughead.
